Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, Government of Pakistan, hosted a briefing and interactive session on Sovereign Domestic Green Sukuk, bringing together key stakeholders to discuss the development, structure, and impact of Pakistan’s green Islamic finance instrument. The session was graced by Mr. Khurram Schehzad, Advisor to the Federal Minister on Economic and Financial Reforms, Ministry of Finance, Government of Pakistan, as the Chief Guest.
Chairperson of PSX Dr. Shamshad Akhtar in her remarks, highlighted the robust mechanism now in place for the issuance of Sukuk and underscored the success of Sukuk and her role in taking the leap forward in her previous roles esp. when she was Governor SBP. She emphasized the strategic importance of Green Sukuk as an instrument to channel capital toward climate-resilient infrastructure and environmentally sustainable development.
In his remarks Advisor to Finance Minister on Economic and Financial Reforms Khurram Schehzad said that it is a moment of great significance for Pakistan to formally launch first-ever sovereign domestic green Sukuk. This initiative places Pakistan alongside a growing number of climate-conscious nations, demonstrating our commitment to aligning fiscal instruments with environmental priorities and Shariah-compliant financing.
MD/CEO of PSX Mr. Farrukh H Sabzwari, said that, the journey of Sukuk development in Pakistan has gained significant momentum. PSX had witnessed 19 auctions worth PKR 2.35 trillion, with the majority of investor interest concentrated in one-year instruments, reflecting the market’s growing appetite for Shariah-compliant securities.
The session was attended by leading representatives from commercial banks, brokerage firms, asset management companies, and microfinance banks. Their active participation in the interactive segment reflected a strong appetite across the financial sector to contribute to Pakistan’s green transition through capital market solutions.
The event concluded with an open dialogue on the role of sovereign Green Sukuk in financing climate-smart public infrastructure, and the policy and regulatory support needed to expand the green Islamic finance space in Pakistan.
